Philadelphia Midwives- A List of Area Providers

Midwifery is the practice of caring for women for gynecological care, throughout pregnancy, delivery, and during the postpartum period.  It is practiced by health care professionals who are certified nurse midwives who are trained to manage pregnancy and birth with less invasive techniques and procedures than OB/GYNs. There is a focus on allowing the body to naturally manage pain during birth and help manage minor complications with natural techniques.  It is this holistic and natural approach that draws most women to use a midwife during pregnancy.   I actually used a midwife for my last pregnancy.  I had previously used an OB/GYN for my previous pregnancies and there was a WORLD of a difference when it came to the third go around.  I have put together this list of local Philadelphia Midwives for mothers looking for an alternative to the traditional OB/GYN in pregnancy.

The List of Philadelphia Midwives

WomanWise Midwifery

This midwifery practice has four midwives and sees patients at an East Norriton location and an Erdenheim location.  Deliveries take place in the Einstein Medical Center Montgomery hospital.  What is great about this practice is the support and flexibility given to women as they labor.  This practice only offers hospital births so there is peace of mind during delivery in case a need for intervention arises.  But because deliveries are with a midwife, there is opportunity for a natural, unmedicated birth- if you want one.

The Philadelphia Midwife Collective

This independently operated midwife practice is located in Philadelphia, PA.  They have one midwife on staff, a lactation consultant and a chiropractor. They offer a wider range of services for women- even including well care in their practice, family planning services, and lactation consultation.  Birth services offer deliveries in both hospital and home settings.  The hospitals they are affiliated with are Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia and Einstein Medical Center Montgomery in East Norriton, PA.

Inner Circle Midwifery

This midwife practice is located in Germantown Pennsylvania.  They also offer a wide range of services including care pre-conception through postpartum care.  The practice not only provides midwifery care but they also have four doulas available for mothers.  Doulas offer emotional, mental and physical support for laboring mothers and are a great addition to any midwifery practice.

You can find more information on their website here.

Refuge Midwifery

Refuge Midwifery is the next practice on my list.  It is located in Philadelphia, PA and serves several counties in the surrounding area, including nearby communities in New Jersey.  This practice offers infertility assistance, including LGBTQ centered conception support with in-home IUI.  There is a great emphasis at this practice on education and classes on multiple topics are available for the growing family.  Refuge midwifery offers home birth services and include a home birthing tub.  Laboring in a tub is a great way to manage pain, so this is a service many mothers who are looking for a home birth will love!

Magpi Midwifery

Magpi Midwifery is the next local midwife practice on my list.  They are also located in Philadelphia, PA and offer a number of services to their patients.  Their list includes homebirth, water births, and placenta encapsulation and counseling for fertility and preconception.

My take on Philadelphia Midwives

So there you have it! Some of the best Philadelphia Midwives in the area!  If you are pregnant or trying to conceive, it’s always a good time to consider your birth experience.  You can chat with some of these midwives to see if they’re a good fit for you and your birth plan! I love the holistic and natural experience midwives provide mothers.  In my experience, I felt like the care was more personalized and thoughtful when compared to obstetric care provided by an obstetrician.  I also loved that there were options to birth in a hospital – which was my personal preference during my last pregnancy. I hope this list helps you find a great midwife if you are considering one for your next pregnancy!
